Grow Your Own Mushrooms
Every attendee leaves this program with a homemade mushroom grow kit made from recycled materials — and the science to understand exactly what is happening inside it. In this 45–60 minute program, we explore the anatomy of a mushroom, the full lifecycle of a fungus from spore to fruiting body and back again, and the remarkable role mycelium plays in forest ecosystems. The hands-on inoculation at the end brings the science to life: using cardboard or spent coffee grounds, attendees build their own kit and leave ready to grow. No prior science background needed. Just curiosity.
Every attendee will receive a Grow Kit made of recycled materials.
Optional: If you would prefer the professional Fat Moon Mushroom Grow Kit, you may purchase one for $28, paid directly to Elizabeth at the class. During registration, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to purchase the professional kit so we can prepare accordingly.

Instructor
Elizabeth Almeida is the owner of Fat Moon Mushrooms and a former commercial mushroom grower with ten years of experience supplying James Beard and Michelin-recognized restaurants across New England. She spent a decade growing oyster, shiitake, lion's mane, and specialty varieties at scale, learning the biology of fungi from the inside out. Now she channels that expertise into education — helping home growers, students, and curious adults understand the remarkable science happening right under our feet. Elizabeth believes the best science lessons begin with a question and end with something you can hold in your hands.
